The motto of Prestige Home Building of Chatham is “one quality home at a time,” and principal Ralph Nixon’s latest project shows all the attention to detail and quality his company is known for. The house is a continuation of the series of fine homes built by Prestige previously featured in the 2011 edition of Southern New England Home and a 2012 edition of Home Remodeling, and it shares the same trademark appreciation for light, airy spaces.
The living is easy
“It’s a very bright house,” Nixon says of the new project. “The sun comes up on one side and sets on the other side and it has beautiful views of Ryder’s Cove.”
The 3,200 square-foot Chatham home encompasses three levels of living space that is beautifully laid out. On the main level the living room has a modern-style gas fireplace set in a wall and surrounded by custom cabinetry. It is separated from the kitchen by a stylish island, perfect for family members or guests to relax with a glass of wine and chat with the home chef.
The kitchen itself is a chef’s dream with professional-grade, top-end Thermador appliances, granite countertops and off-white solid wood cabinetry custom built by Kitchen Creations. A lovely eating area just off the kitchen offers beautiful water views while dining. Details like crown molding throughout the house, grooved wainscoting and thoughtfully placed custom built-ins create a sense of casual elegance.
Staircases, with white balusters and oak handrails and accent pieces that perfectly match the hardwood flooring throughout the house, wind up to the second floor and down to the lower level.
All three bedrooms are located on the second floor of the home. Each bedroom has a private en suite bath. The bathrooms are each done in different types of marbles with built-in showers with glass enclosures. The oh-so spacious master bath also features a Jacuzzi soaking tub. There is an upstairs laundry and plenty of closets for storage.
“It’s all conservation land behind the house with very large trees,” Nixon says. “It feels like a tree house when you are on the second floor. It’s very beautiful.”
One of the nicest features of the house is the unexpectedly large walk-out lower level. Large windows allow for plenty of light in the three separate living spaces. The family room features a built-in gas fireplace and built-in custom cabinetry. A game and pool table area guarantees hours of family fun, whether with children, grandchildren or friends.
“The end room with a picture window and a patio off it would make a great office or another sleeping space,” Nixon says of the third room on the lower level, adding there is also a full bath on that level for convenience.
A classic Cape look
The exterior of the house is covered with cedar shingles that have been bleached with Cabot oil to protect them and give them an already weathered look. White trim and federal blue shutters create a classic Cape look. A deck on the side has glass panels between the railings so the water views are not obstructed, yet breezes are kept to a minimum. The attached two-car garage is oversized with room for not only cars, but other items the homeowner would like to store.
Nestled on a lot that is just over an acre in size, the landscaping includes beautiful plantings, a lovely stone patio and serpentine stone retaining walls. The house is located in a quiet new neighborhood with only four houses on the cul-de-sac. Waterfront living doesn’t get much better than this.
Nixon prides himself on building top-quality houses using the best subcontractors on Cape Cod, including J.P. Smith Builders in East Sandwich and Chatham architects Zibrat and McCarthy Design. He’s been building houses for close to 25 years and plans to continue with his passion for building in the future. This particular house is a spec house that is currently for sale.
